There comes a point in summer where looking elegant starts to feel like a proper personal attack.
You leave the house feeling fresh, smooth and put together. Ten minutes later, the sun’s blazing down like it’s got a vendetta, your bra’s digging in, your thighs are having words, and your hair’s gone full drama queen in the humidity.
Honestly, pet, it’s a lot.
But keeping cool does not mean giving up and wandering about looking like you’ve been dragged through a beach hut backwards. You can still look classy, still feel gorgeous, and still dress like a woman who knows herself — without melting into the pavement by lunchtime.
The trick is choosing clothes that work with your body, not against it.
First things first: fabric matters. I know, I know, it sounds boring, but trust me, it’s the difference between floating through the day and feeling like you’ve wrapped yourself in a carrier bag. Cotton, linen blends, bamboo, viscose, breathable jersey — that’s the good stuff. Anything too stiff, too clingy or too plasticky can get in the bin, because nobody needs to be fighting their own top on a hot day.
And fit? Same story. You want movement, man. A floaty dress. A loose shirt. Wide-leg trousers. A soft midi skirt. A relaxed jumpsuit. Something that lets the air get in and lets you breathe. Classy does not mean strapped in like you’re being posted somewhere.
Underwear is where a lot of summer outfits either work or gan completely sideways. A breathable bra, smooth knickers, anti-chafing shorts or a lightweight slip can save your whole day. Honestly, the right base layer is not glamorous, but neither is waddling round town because your thighs are on fire.
If you love dresses but hate the dreaded thigh rub, get yourself some anti-chafing shorts. No shame. No fuss. Just comfort. They let you walk, sit, dance, shop, travel, live your life — all without that horrible end-of-day sting. That’s not boring. That’s clever.
And divvn’t let anyone tell you comfort means you’ve stopped making an effort. Absolute rubbish. Comfort is what lets you carry yourself properly. When you are not tugging, pulling, sweating or adjusting every five minutes, you look calmer. You feel better. You move better. That’s where the elegance comes from.
Colour helps too. Soft neutrals, cream, pale blue, sage green, blush pink, white, stone shades — they all give that lovely fresh summer feel. But if you’re a black-clothes lass through and through, don’t panic. You can still wear darker colours and look stunning. Just make sure the fabric is light and the shape is easy. A black linen dress? Gorgeous. A tight polyester bodycon in 27-degree heat? Nee chance, pet.
A good summer outfit usually has one relaxed bit and one polished bit. A linen shirt with tailored shorts. A soft vest with wide-leg trousers. A floaty skirt with a neat little top. A simple dress with good sandals and gold hoops. That’s the sweet spot. Easy, but not scruffy. Comfortable, but still intentional.
And listen — arms, legs, shoulders, cleavage, belly outlines, soft bits, all of it — they’re allowed to exist. Classy does not mean hiding yourself away like a Victorian sideboard. It means wearing things that make you feel steady, confident and like yourself.
If a neckline feels good, wear it. If a shorter dress makes you feel lush, wear it. If you prefer more coverage, that’s fine too. The point is not dressing for some imaginary committee of people who apparently have nowt better to do than judge your outfit. The point is dressing for your day, your comfort and your confidence.
Shoes matter more than we pretend, an’ all. A lovely outfit can be ruined by sandals that rub your heels raw before you’ve even made it to the bus stop. Choose shoes you can actually walk in. Stylish does not have to mean suffering. You are not getting extra elegance points for limping.
Accessories can do loads without making you hotter. Sunglasses, hoops, a woven bag, a soft scarf tied round your hair or bag, a simple necklace, a decent hat if that’s your thing. Little details can make a basic outfit look properly pulled together without adding layers you’ll regret.
Same with beauty. You don’t need a full face sliding down your chin by lunchtime. Tinted moisturiser, SPF, lip balm, cream blush, tidy brows, bit of glow — done. Fresh beats frazzled every time. Hair up in a claw clip, soft bun, ponytail, whatever keeps you cool and makes you feel human.
The big thing is this: divvn’t punish your body for being warm.
Bodies sweat. Bodies swell a little. Bodies get shiny. Bodies change through the day. That does not mean you’ve failed at looking nice. It means you’re alive, pet. You’re not a shop mannequin. Thank goodness for that.
So this summer, keep it breathable. Keep it soft. Keep it easy. Choose underwear that supports you, clothes that let you move, and shoes that do not betray you halfway through the day.
Because keeping it classy is not about pretending the heat does not exist.
It’s about looking in the mirror, giving yourself a little nod, and saying, “Aye, she’s still got it.”
Even if she’s sweating a bit.
