Not sure what knickers to wear under gym leggings? From seamless styles to thongs and breathable fabrics, here’s a practical guide to staying comfortable, supported and VPL-free during your workout.
Right, let’s have a proper chat about this, yeah? Because no one really tells you, do they. You get your leggings, you’re feelin’ good, ready for the gym… and then suddenly you’re mid-squat wondering if your knickers are betrayin’ you from behind. Not ideal.
So if you’ve ever stood there thinking “what am I actually meant to wear under these?” don’t worry, I’ve got you.
First things first, the golden rule: whatever you wear, it needs to disappear. Not literally, obviously, but you don’t want lines, bunching, or anything digging in while you’re trying to focus on your workout.
Seamless knickers are honestly your best mate here. They’re designed to sit flat against your skin, so no visible panty lines (VPL – and yes, we do care, I don’t care what anyone says). Look for laser-cut edges and soft fabrics that don’t dig in. If you’ve got a good pair of seamless, you’ll forget you’re even wearing them, which is exactly what you want.
Now… let’s talk thongs. I know, I know. Some of you love them, some of you are like “absolutely not, Kara.” But truth is, they do the job. No lines, no fuss. If you’re wearing tighter leggings or lighter colours, a thong can be the easiest solution. Just make sure it’s breathable, yeah? Cotton or moisture-wicking fabric, not something that’s gonna have you feeling uncomfortable halfway through a workout.
For my girls who hate thongs (I see you), go for a no-VPL brief or short style. These give you a bit more coverage but still keep things smooth. Just avoid thick seams or anything with lace edges, because that’s where lines start creeping in and ruining your whole vibe.
Fabric is massive as well, don’t overlook it. You’re sweating, moving, stretching… your knickers need to keep up. Look for breathable, moisture-wicking materials. Cotton blends are nice, but for proper workouts, sports fabrics are even better. The last thing you want is feeling damp and uncomfortable when you’re just trying to smash your session.
And here’s a little tip that no one really says out loud: match your knickers to your leggings colour. Nude tones under lighter leggings are a lifesaver. White leggings with dark knickers? We’re not doing that, babe. We’re just not.
Also, sizing matters more than you think. If they’re too tight, they’ll dig in and show lines. Too loose, and they’ll move about and bunch up. You want that perfect fit where they just sit there, minding their own business.
At the end of the day, it’s about comfort and confidence. You shouldn’t be thinking about your knickers while you’re working out. You should be thinking about your form, your playlist, or what you’re having after (probably a snack, let’s be honest).
So whether you’re a seamless girl, a thong girl, or somewhere in between, just make sure it works for you. Because when you feel good underneath it all, it shows in how you move, how you carry yourself, and how you smash that gym session.
